Challenge
Many of Oakland’s public schoolyards were built decades ago – and it shows. Cracked asphalt, limited shade, little to no greenery, faded paint, and a lack of varied play spaces leave students with environments that are outdated, unsafe, and uninspiring. For spaces meant to support movement, creativity, and connection, these schoolyards often fall short.
That’s why Eat. Learn. Play.’s is putting in real effort to transform elementary schoolyards across Oakland Unified School District into vibrant, student-centered spaces, in partnership with Oakland Unified School District and KaBOOM!
Creative Solution
For this 20-minute mini-documentary, we crafted an immersive, emotionally driven narrative that highlights the issue of outdated schoolyards and the transformative impact of Eat. Learn. Play. At the core of the process of reimagining Oakland’s schoolyards are the students themselves. Kids were invited to design their dream playgrounds – sketching, sharing ideas, and imagining spaces that felt fun, safe, and welcoming. Those ideas directly informed the final designs. Through community build days, volunteers worked side by side to help bring the collective vision to life.
